Yarmouth girls dominate Winslow in first playoff test

YARMOUTH—When you’re the top seed and the heavy favorite, you might as well come out and take care of business as quickly as possible.

Yarmouth’s powerhouse girls’ lacrosse team did just that Wednesday afternoon in its first playoff test, which turned into more of an exhibition of the Clippers’ brilliance.

Hosting No. 8 Winslow in a Class B North quarterfinal, Yarmouth went ahead to stay just over two minutes into the contest when junior Meredith Lane scored.

Then, the floodgates opened.

Cape girls erupt late to eliminate Waynflete in quarterfinals

CAPE ELIZABETH—For more than 40 minutes Wednesday evening at Hannaford Field, Waynflete’s girls’ lacrosse team had the host Cape Elizabeth Capers on the ropes, with the game played at the Flyers’ pace and all the pressure on the hosts.

But this Cape Elizabeth edition isn’t encumbered by pressure or the weight of history and with their season on the line, the Capers saved their best for last.

And as a result, will play another day.

Two weeks after giving up 15 goals in a home loss to Cape Elizabeth, the Flyers made a quick statement when senior Ali Pope scored unassisted three minutes in.

Cape Elizabeth surges past Waynflete
The Capers use a 7-1 run in the second half to reach the Class B South semifinals.

...The Capers (8-5) used a 7-1 surge in the second half to wipe out a 5-3 halftime deficit and secure their first playoff victory since 2014.

“All we said at halftime was, ‘Hey, wipe that score off – it’s 0-0,’ ” said Capers Coach Alex Spark. “We knew we needed to go out and play Cape lacrosse. We left it very simple.

“In the first half it was tough. We were turning the ball over and they were getting shots we didn’t want them to get. We’ve done a good job all season, when things aren’t going our way, of kind of just wiping it out and starting fresh.”

Late Laker rally stuns York girls lacrosse in OT

...We played our game for 45 minutes, and in the final five minutes we decided to get lazy; that’s really all I can say.”

Lake Region (8-5) had already dug itself out of a 6-0 hole, amassed through the opening 14 minutes of the game, by ending the first half on a 5-1 run. The Lakers defeated York, 10-2, in last Friday’s regular-season finale and will now travel to No. 2 Falmouth (9-3) in Saturday’s regional semifinal round.

“That wasn’t looking good. They just gave it all they had,” Lake Region coach David Keenan said. “First we got down 6-0, came out flat and we knew we were in trouble. They just decided to play all-in and play like we did against them a few days ago, and it was just two good teams going at it by that point. It just happened to go our way.”
