Messalonskee prepares for regional finals
Eagles seek return trip to state title game; Tigers hope to snap slide to Clippers.

...“I’ve said that from the beginning of the season, I have a lot of girls on my team that refuse to lose, and that will help us. I’m sure Windham’s the same way,” Crystal Leavitt, Messalonskee’s first-year head coach, said.

Messalonskee and Windham did not play in the regular season.

“We know they’re an athletic group of girls and play good defense,” senior co-captain Lydia Dexter said.

Hawks embracing underdog role entering regional final

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — In recent years, the almost annual battle between girls lacrosse teams from Marshwood High School and Massabesic has been a highlight of the Class A tournament.

Four times since 2012, the two programs have met in the regional championship or semifinals, with those four games being decided by a total of seven goals.

Messalonskee edges Windham in overtime
Lydia Dexter scores the winner as Messalonskee returns to the Class A state title game.

...WATERVILLE — The way Lydia Dexter saw it, the final play of the Class A North girls’ lacrosse final was set up so perfectly, how could she not score?

“It was the most perfect pass I think I’ve ever received. I didn’t have to do much,” said Dexter, a Messalonskee co-captain. “I just saw the shot and put it in. Thank God for Kaitlyn Smith on that one.”

As the first overtime neared its finish, Dexter took Smith’s pass and fired a high shot from the left of the Windham net. Dexter’s shot was true, and her goal with 6.5 seconds left gave Messalonskee a come-from-behind 7-6 win.

Massabesic returning to Class A state championship game
The unbeaten Mustangs top Marshwood, 6-2, in the South regional final.

... Taylor Manning made it 5-0 from Hallie Benton with 38 seconds left in the half. Pike and Cailyn Forrester each had two assists.

“Our defense isn’t nearly at the full strength we could be,” said Emma Desrochers, who anchored a stellar back four for Massabesic that included Madeline Beauchesne, Kaylee St. Laurent and Abi Chaves.

“There’s a lot of improvement still happening and a lot we still need to work on. But we kept our feet moving, we saw their cuts, we were able to anticipate and we just got after it.”

After slow start, Hawks can’t catch Mustangs

... If there was a bright spot Wednesday, it was the play of junior goalie Skyler Amsden, who was credited with 10 saves. Five of those came on free-position chances, a series of stops that kept the game from getting out of hand.

“Amazing,” said senior midfielder Reagan Nichols. “She kept it from getting away. She kept us in it.”

“She’s a fantastic goalie,” said Massabesic coach Brooks Bowen. “She covers a pretty big goal area and she’s not very big. I don’t know how many saves she had, but there were a lot.”

Massabesic and Messalonskee meet again in Class A

...Sharing the rest of the scoring load are Morgan Pike (31 goals, 26 assists), Taylor Manning (28/9), Logan Champlin (26/11) and Skylar Renaud (22/12). Josie Ring, Hallie Benton and Cailyn Forrester have at least 12 goals apiece.

Lydia Wasina stopped 60 percent of shots and sports a 3.1 goals-against average.

“We lost a lot of defenders to graduation, so we’ve got a lot of new bodies in there,” said Massabesic Coach Brooks Bowen. “But we’ve been pretty diligent in practices and in games, pounding out the details around the defense. They get better at what they do every day. They don’t panic.”

“Unfinished Business is our motto,” Drain said. “It was painful, but we definitely learned from it. Last year, we got (the state title) in our heads a little too soon and we threw it away. This year, we got it.”

Gaby Languet a big-time stopper for Messalonskee lacrosse
Goalie turning in 1 strong performance after another in playoffs.

...“Gaby’s always great, but she had an outstanding game (Wednesday). Ten saves, that’s phenomenal, especially against a really good team,” Messalonskee coach Crystal Leavitt, who played goalie as a high school player at Morse, said. “As soon as goalies make good saves, I’ll tell you what, it pumps up a team. If a goalie stops that many saves and get the momentum going, that’s an unbreakable bond the team has now. There’s nothing better than shutting down a good team.”

With the graduation of last season’s goalie, Sydni Collier, the Eagles had a hole in net. Languet had played goal since eighth grade, but last season moved out to defense.

“This year, I put the gear back on and it felt good,” Languet said.
