Falmouth girls stifled by Kennebunk on Senior Night

FALMOUTH—The Kennebunk girls’ lacrosse team certainly knows how to “rebuild.”

The defending Class B state champions have picked right up from where they left off a year ago, remaining dominant despite having many holes to fill, and the previously undefeated Falmouth Yachtsmen found that out the hard way Tuesday evening.

The Rams were able to hold the potent Yachtsmen attack in check for a giant swath of the game and once they got their offense got going in the second half, there would be no stopping them.

Kennebunk stifles Falmouth
The Rams hold the previously unbeaten Yachtsmen scoreless for a stretch of more than 36 minutes.

... The Rams (8-1) have a seven-game winning streak.

“Our defense is pretty stifling,” said Kennebunk Coach Annie Barker. “We thought about doing something different with it and I was like ‘nope, let’s play them straight up and see what we can do.’

“Our defense is so strong right now and we wanted to see if we could do it straight up, and if we had to make a change we would have made (one).”

Kennebunk, the defending Class B state champion, stifled the Yachtsmen (8-1), especially after the midway point of the first half.

Kennebunk girls edge Cape in defensive struggle

CAPE ELIZABETH—Both the Cape Elizabeth and Kennebunk girls’ lacrosse teams can put the ball in the net, but conditions Tuesday evening at Hannaford Field weren’t conducive to offensive success.

The Capers couldn’t produce their usual prolific amount of goals due mostly to turnovers, while the defending Class B state champion Rams were stymied by Cape Elizabeth sophomore goalie Erin Foley.

That spelled a game that was low-scoring and tight throughout and one that wouldn’t be determined until the final minute of regulation.

Kennebunk beats Cape Elizabeth with final-minute goal
The Rams score with 58.8 seconds remaining after Cape Elizabeth's second-half rally ties it.

...Fogg’s goal for the Rams (9-2) came on the heels of a dominant second half by Cape Elizabeth goalie Erin Foley, who finished with eight saves.

“I just dodged and switched to my left, and found the open top corner,” Fogg said. “When I saw it I figured, why not take the shot. I was aiming for non-stick side and my stick was already high. I had girls on me so I couldn’t really try to fake low.”

The goal was especially impressive considering that Foley looked impossible to beat for most of the second half.
