Waynflete girls put it together, earn interclass win over Cheverus

PORTLAND—After an up-and-down first half of the 2017 season, the young but promising Waynflete girls’ lacrosse team believes it’s about to the corner and be more consistent and successful.

Saturday afternoon at Fore River Fields, the Flyers took the first step toward that goal with a solid performance in a key interclass test against visiting Cheverus.

Waynflete fell behind when Stags senior standout Brooke McElman scored two quick goals, but the Flyers settled down and demonstrated just how explosive their offense can be.

Waynflete:: edges Lake Region in 2 OT thriller

Oh brother, what a win for the sister! Waynflete edges Lake Region in 2 OT thriller

PORTLAND—Waynflete’s girls’ lacrosse team is synonymous with postseason success and the possibility of the Flyers not taking part in the playoffs is unthinkable.

That was very much in play, however, prior to the Flyers hosting Lake Region Monday afternoon to kick off a crucial closing stretch of the regular season as Waynflete was on the outside of the Class B South Heal Points standings looking in and desperately needed a win.

The Flyers would get one, but it was take more than the allotted 50 minutes to achieve.

Waynflete wins in double OT
Laura Baginski's third goal of the game gives the Flyers an 11-10 victory over Lake Region.

...“It was a super-fun game, but it was stressful,” Waynflete Coach Cathie Connors said. “We knew they have super-strong players and it was going to depend on who scored last.”

“It was the first time we’ve gone into double overtime,” Lake Region Coach David Keenan said. “It was an exciting game between two evenly-matched teams.”

Keenan and Connors are brother and sister, so the game held special significance for them.

“We’ve played each other three times, and all of the games have been close,” Keenan said. “The last two games have been (decided by one goal), and my sister’s team has won both of them.”

Waynflete girls upset Falmouth on Senior Day, punch playoff ticket

PORTLAND—Waynflete’s girls’ lacrosse team played a nearly perfect first half Tuesday afternoon at Fore River Fields, awakening the echoes, and staggering the favored, visiting Falmouth Yachtsmen.

And it’s a good thing that the Flyers opened up a 6-1 halftime lead because the Yachtsmen roared back with a vengeance in the second half, only to fall one goal short in a compelling late-season showdown between Class B South contenders.

Waynflete, riding the emotion of honoring three seniors before the game, two who took the field and another who will never be forgotten, and desperately needing a big win to ensure a playoff berth, broke the ice a little over three minutes in when senior Ali Pope scored.
