Mustangs gallop past Hawks in early showdown

... “I think we learned a lot as to how we’re working as a team right now,” Marshwood goalie Skyler Amsden said. “People are in new positions, just seeing how we’re dealing with different teams already at the beginning of the season. [It’s] good to see we pushed to the end as an entire team, especially at the beginning of the season. We already know we’re working together as a team.”

Marshwood (1-1) held a 2-1 lead early on in the first half as Hannah Costin (three goals) scored two goals in the first five minutes of the game. Massabesic (1-0) answered with four straight goals to end the half, with Skylar Renaud (two goals), Morgan Pike (two goals) and Madison Drain each finding the back of the net to give the Mustangs a 5-2 lead going into halftime.

Josie Ring notched Massabesic’s sixth goal of the game to open the second half but was quickly answered by Costin to bring the deficit back down to three goals.

Mustangs top Deering, remain undefeated

... Morgan Pike led the Mustangs with a game-high four points while Logan Champlin added a trio of scores. Maddie Drain and Skylar Renaud would add two each, while Emma Desrochers, Kailyn Forrester, Josie Ring and Hallie Benton added one apiece.

Deering’s Allie Donovan scored two goals for the Rams, while Kiaya Gatchell added the third.

Massabesic coach Brooks Bowen felt that it was important for his club to jump out to the fast start.

“In a game that has a lot of momentum going into it, it was good to get off to a good start, especially for the coaching staff on the sideline. It builds confidence, it allows us to coach the girls up and to get a good rotation going as well,” said Bowen.

Undefeated Massabesic stops Windham
The Mustangs score five of the first six goals and roll to a 13-6 victory.

... “When you’re playing against a zone, you cannot hold onto the ball,” said Massabesic Coach Brooks Bowen. “You’ve got to be able to move the move the ball and you have to be able to catch in small areas with passes.

“One of the key things we’ve worked on this year is the ability to catch in a tight, small area – especially inside the 8 when they close in on you. Tonight we were really able to execute that.”

The Mustangs (9-0) scored the first three goals and opened a 5-1 lead midway through the first half.
