New coaches lead Messalonskee teams with high expectations
Eagles welcome new coaches for softball, girls lacrosse squads.

...Leavitt takes over the girls lacrosse post this season, while Moore replaces 11-year fixture Leo Bouchard in the softball dugout. They are two of three new girls coaches at Messalonskee this spring, with Lynn Richard now at the helm of the girls tennis team.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Moore said. “I have a staff that’s looking forward to it, and if the people who are coaching are invested, it’s going to be a great season no matter what the (final) record is.”

Both Leavitt and Moore have recent experience at Messalonskee.

Photos and video: Oceanside girls lacrosse indoor action

THOMASTON — The gymnasium can be a fun and cozy place to play lacrosse, something the Oceanside girls team continues to discover as the Mariners wait for the snow to melt to get outdoors — and more space to roam.

In the meantime, the Mariners, under the guidance of veteran coach Angie Vachon, continue to prepare for the regular season, as they do in these images and video on Thursday, March 30 in the Oceanside West gymnasium.

Watch video below.

York: New-look Wildcats have simple approach

...We’re just going to take it one game at a time,” said York head coach Jodie Lawlor, entering her 13th season at the helm of the Wildcats. “I think we have a very talented group to put out there, but until we get on the field and start to see some real competition, I am not sure.”

The Wildcats not only lost three seniors from last year’s team, including starter Lindsey Cole, but the Wildcats also lost Kate Marshall and MacKenzie Mallett, who both enrolled at Berwick Academy last fall for their senior season.

Mallett was York’s second leading scorer last season.

Five seniors named captains for talented York squad

Jodie Lawlor did something for the first time in her 13 seasons as head coach of the York High School girls lacrosse team — she named all her seniors, five of them, captains.

“I really wasn’t expecting that, I didn’t see that coming, but I love that coach chose that route,” said Renee Abruzzese, one of the five captains along with Allie Lawlor, Allie Lauersen, Emma Ford and Cara Smith. “I really feel honored to be part of the five captains, and really excited to be working together with these girls.”

Marshwood Hawks hungry for a state title run

... Albers, Nichols, Singer and talented attack Hannah Costin are the senior captains handed the keys to the leadership car. They were sophomore starters on the title team in 2015 and key players last year, during a season that was defined by two one-goal games against the Mustangs, including the one that ended their season.

“We’re hungry to get back there and get our revenge,” said Nichols, a defensive midfielder who’ll continue her career next year at Division II AIC.

“Paige, Reagan and Luci all played for me on the Maine team that went down to the (U.S. Women’s Lacrosse) National Tournament (last spring),” noted Marshwood coach Bernie Marvin. “With Hannah, all four of them are four-year varsity players. Just wonderful kids.”

SJ Girls' lacrosse preview: New conference, same goals for St. Dom's

... Still a young team, St. Dom's returns many of their players from last year that went 12-0 in the regular season while experiencing no key losses. Reaching the playoffs again this year is their goal and a move to the Western Maine Conference could prove challenging.

"The WMC high school programs are generally stronger than most of those we played against last year. This is mostly because their athletes have been playing together longer due to established town and recreational leagues. We hope to use this higher level of competition to further develop our skills and field play to prepare us for a more successful run in the playoffs this year," St. Dom's coach Leslie Klenk said.

Junior Maddy Leslie will return to anchor the defense and provide some leadership for the Saints. Sophomores Caroline Gastonguay and Kristina Cornelio will lead the offense. St. Dom's also benefits from having a number of their girls just come off a successful girls' hockey state championship.

CM Girls lacrosse preview: Messalonskee recharged for another state title run
Eagles have new coach, new talent but veteran championship core.

... The Eagles will boast what is arguably the best offensive attack in the state. They’ll be led by the best offensive weapon in the state in junior Ally Turner, who scored 61 goals last season. Turner recently committed to Division I Wagner, where she will continue her career on a lacrosse scholarship.

Adding to the attack will be Lydia Dexter and Lauren Pickett, who were each key players on a state championship-winning team.

The defense will be led by junior Haley Lowell, who will be the veteran leader of a group that also includes sophomore Autumn Littlefield.
