Bergeron and Blais power Lewiston past Deering

LEWISTON — The Lewiston High School girls' lacrosse team was "impatient" and seemed to ignore coach Skip Capone's directions.

More times than not, when Capone yelled out "patience," the ball found the back of the net shortly thereafter, with Olivia Bergeron and Kristina Blais scoring five goals each. The Blue Devils went on to beat the Deering Rams 14-5 in a Class A North quarterfinal contest at Don Rioux Athletic Complex.

"I am going to throw the word patience out of my dictionary," Lewiston coach Skip Capone said. "It is what it is. I talk a little bit. The kids have to be athletes and try to make plays. We did that in a a lot of phases today. It was a really nice victory."

South Portland rallies past Gorham in quarterfinal
Jena Leckie ties it late, and Mary Cronin wins it in the second overtime.

GORHAM — Jena Leckie came off the bench for the South Portland girls’ lacrosse team and scored one of the biggest goals in school history in Wednesday’s Class A South quarterfinal matchup against Gorham.

With 3.7 seconds left in regulation, the freshman midfielder found the back of the cage to tie the game, setting the stage for the No. 5 Red Riots to come from behind to beat the fourth-seeded Rams, 11-10, in double overtime.

South Portland advances to a Saturday semifinal against Marshwood.

Thornton rolls into semifinals
The Trojans get four goals from Paige Leblanc and cruise into the Class A South semis with a 15-1 win over Biddeford.

SACO — Paige LeBlanc says Wednesday’s dominant 15-1 Class A South quarterfinal win against Biddeford shows how much her third-ranked Thornton Academy girls’ lacrosse team has improved.

In the regular season, Thornton slogged its way to a 9-5 win against the sixth-seeded Tigers.

“We took the win against Biddeford and we were kind of unsatisfied with the results because we know we have the potential to be a very good team,” said LeBlanc, a midfielder and Thornton’s draw specialist. “We applied what we thought we could do and just made that work.”

Messalonskee girls lacrosse rolls into A North semifinals

WATERVILLE — The biggest scare the top-seeded Messalonskee High School girls lacrosse team received Wednesday afternoon in its Class A North quarterfinal against No. 8 Cheverus came 2:47 into the game.

Senior captain India Languet rolled along the crease from left to right and fired a shot from 15 feet away past Stags goalkeeper Abby Cavallaro, but in the process also tweaked her left ankle and proceeded to limp off the field.

As it would turn out, Languet would be just fine — and so were the Eagles.

Defending-champ Marshwood gets playoff run off on right foot

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — With almost two weeks between its last regular season game and the start of the playoffs, the Marshwood High School girls lacrosse team was getting antsy.

Despite the long layoff, the Hawks responded with one of their most complete performances of the season Wednesday.

Top-seeded Marshwood scored three times in the first four minutes and never let up in a 15-1 rout of Bonny Eagle in the quarterfinals of the Class A South playoffs.
